What is piriformis syndrome? Piriformis syndrome occurs when your piriformis muscle compresses your sciatic nerve and results in inflammation. It can cause pain or numbness in your buttock and down the back of your leg. It can happen on one side of your body or both. The piriformis is a flat, narrow muscle.

#Symptoms

A dull ache in the buttock. Pain down the back of the thigh, calf and foot (sciatica) Pain when walking up stairs or inclines. Increased pain after prolonged sitting.

Patients often report pain in the gluteal region that is characterized as shooting, burning, or aching down the back of the leg. In addition, numbness in the buttocks and tingling sensations along the distribution of the sciatic nerve is not uncommon.
